Austin Skyline Sunrise Reflection

Early morning at sunrise in Austin.

Austin Texas is one of my favorite places to hang out and to photograph in and around.  It is growing so fast right now that it appears to be bursting at the seams, and the skyline is constantly changing and construction is attempting to keep up with all the new inhabitants.

Butler park and the trails that run next to the river are a great place to go for a morning walk or a jog to get some perspective and get your day started.  That is exactly what I was doing just before sunrise when the skies gave me this opportunity that I couldn’t pass up… Luckily I rarely go anywhere around this area without a camera!

Cloudy Lake Sunset

A storm had just passed and I actually got rained on as I was setting up, but the clouds opened up to reveal this sunset with some nice color in the sky against the slow moving clouds.

Austin Texas Skyline Reflecting in Ladybird Lake

The last time I was in Austin I woke up early to go grab this image before the lake got populated with people for the day.  There were already quite a few people jogging and riding the trail next to the river.  The clouds were moving fast this morning which made for an interesting shot.

This was a week after all the flooding that has happened from the massive recent rains.  The Colorado River was swollen a bit but nothing like it had been a week before.  There is definitely some clean-up and rebuilding to be done from the floods, but I bet they will have all that back in order in no time.

You can see the 1st Street Bridge and the Congress Street Bridge further to the right past it.

Waterfall in Austin Texas

The landscape of Texas has so many variations and a lot of surprises.  Believe it or not, this awesome little waterfall in this wooded area is actually located inside the Austin Texas city limits!

There are creeks and streams and rivers running through and all around Austin and the surrounding areas.   This multiple level waterfall feeds into a larger stream in the southwest corner of Austin called Barton Creek.

This is usually a lot smaller but because of the recent heavy rainfall in the area, it was flowing quite a bit. One of the interesting things about shooting locations with flowing water – they can be different each time you go back. The last time I was here there was almost no water at all.

Battleship Texas

The BattleShip Texas, located at the San Jacinto Battlegrounds near Houston Texas, was first launched in 1912 and commissioned USS Texas on March 12, 1914. At that time she was the most powerful weapon in the world.
She saw action in both World Wars including the North African campaign, Normandy Landings, and Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
The BattleShip Texas was the first US Navy vessel to house a permanently assigned contingent of US Marines. It was the first US BattleShip to mount anti-aircraft guns. it was the first US BattleShip to launch an aircraft. It was the first US Battleship to become a permanent museum ship. And it was the first battleship to be declared a US National Historic Landmark.

Pier Sinking Into The Water

The rainfall has been above average for a few months now in the East Texas area, and the lakes are several feet above their normal levels.

I grew up just around the corner from this pier and I have been planning to get back there to shoot it for months. I finally stopped by a few days ago to shoot it and the lake has almost swallowed it up from all the excessive rain.

It is now an island, completely surrounded by water at this point, which made it a really interesting subject to photograph on this overcast day not long before it began to rain again.

Hope you enjoy it!

Clouds Moving Over East Texas Field

A few days ago I noticed the clouds were looking nice for a shot like this so I thought this location might be a good spot to get a photo of it.  Turned out perfect I think! There are mostly trees around this part of East Texas unless you are looking across a lake or a cleared field like this one. The gently rolling hills and old farm buildings peeking out of the trees was also a nice bonus here.

Hope you like it!

Monument Valley First Light

I shot this early one morning at Monument Valley on the border between Utah and Arizona, just as the sun was about to rise.

Lake in the Wichita Mountains

This is one of the 13 lakes in the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge taken just after sunset. There is just the last bit of color in the clouds. The mountains in the background along with the granite rocks in the foreground make a nice scene here.

This area is only about 15 minutes from the city of Lawton, Oklahoma. If I lived a little closer I would be there all the time!  There is so much to explore here – mountains, canyons, waterfalls, hiking trails, rock climbing, lakes, and lots of wildlife.
